Blog Entry: Another Witness (1829) Usually overlooked when Book of Mormon witnesses are mentioned is the name Mary Whitmer, mother of the witness David.  Bowed down by the toil of caring for not only her own large family but also the Prophet Joseph, his wife Emma, and Oliver Cowdery as they were completing the translation of the Book of Mormon, the Lord felt her faith needed strengthening. David related that his mother was shown the plates by a heavenly being in the family barn, thus becoming the only woman to have the privilege of seeing the actual plates.  One can only wonder why the Lord granted Sister Whitmer such a privilege while withholding it from such apparently worthy sisters as Lucy and Emma.
